The right coolant for a VW Golf 6
The Golf 6 is the sixth edition of the famous Golf series and the direct successor of the VW Golf 5. Built in the period between 2008 and 2012, the compact class, like its predecessors, was sold millions of times in Germany and still characterizes the streetscape in Germany. From the first edition to the Golf has changed not only externally and on the engine, but also the cooling system was changed, which also resulted in a further development of the coolant.
Especially with the VW coolant, the concentrate has changed with its acid additives. Thus, the first coolants were still enriched with inorganic acid. Up to the VW G13 coolant and VW G12evo, meanwhile, much has changed, as these rely on more environmentally friendly additives.
How to find the right coolant
For every car owner, this information can be found in the vehicle manual under the appropriate heading, among other things. Volkswagen uses its own standard for this.
Depending on the year of manufacture or engine, you will find a recommendation for G12, G12+, G12++, G13 or G12evo coolant. However, the G12 coolant has already been replaced by the G12evo coolant.
If you don’t have a vehicle manual at hand or simply want to save yourself the time, you will find a precise list of the Golf 6 models and which coolant they require in the following tables. In addition, you will find information about the total volume of the cooling system of your car.
Which coolants can be used for a Golf 6?
As a VW driver, you have the choice of using an original VW coolant or an approved alternative. The original concentrate is of course used from the factory for your Golf 6. However, the alternatives are in no way inferior to the original. They usually even meet this recommendation and have therefore been approved by VW. In a price comparison, the product alternatives are also cheaper.
The table below shows that the VW G12++ and VW G13 were used for the Golf 6 series. VW no longer produces these standards, but only the latest standard, the VW G12evo. Since this coolant is mixable with the previous G12 and G13 coolants, you currently only have this choice if you want to use an original VW coolant.
